This is kinda like the opposite of Failures thread, where I recomend not to play shit
Episode 1 - Akiba's Trip
I get this first off, since, I think it will interest more people here, then my other rants, becuase it's based about anime and shit. What is Akiba's Trip or Akiba Strip or pronounce it whatever way you like. Well it's basically a game, by the makers of the Way of the Samurai series, which was actualy good, and so it's the same principle: beat up bad guys and go on with your story. And let's get the only good point out of the way here: if you never been to Akihabara, but want to know how it looks like, then this game offers you a free digital tour that is better then google maps. No kidding here. Akihabara's most famous places are rebuild here in a great detail after the original town. And that's it.
Other then that the game is plain boring. But let's start with a little preface: This game draw my interest around last year when I saw it in several stores for the PS3. Tho, like japanese games are, I wasn't realy sure if that's a game I wann aplay anddecided to buy "Kamisama to Genmei Kakumei no Paradokusu" instead (it actualy wasn't good either, but that's maybe something for another time). Now that Akiba's Trip has been ported for the PC I decided to give it a shot. And I must say, I stuck with it for a couple of days, though more out of curiosity, then anything else. But let's get from point to point:
The Setting:
In this game you're some random guy, that starts out being kidnapped by some random evil guys, that turn you into something like a vampire kind of thing, that feeds on the energy from other people and is vulnerable to sunlight. Of Course you aren't fully converted into evil and get some help buy a bunch poorly drawn random characters, of which only one looks kinda decent enough, to aid you in the quest to battle the forces of evil.
Since your enemies, are kinda like you, some sort of vampire things, you battle them, buy beating them up and striping their cloths off. I'm not kidding here. You beat people, just to take off their cloths, so they can die to sunrays. I mean, Japans popculture is famous for various kinds of ridiculous things, but this is just plain stupid. Plain stupid like no, this is not about some ecchi content. It's just it... plain stupid. And that's acutlly it. After 3 days or so I just lost my interest in it, and never made it to the end and I don't believe it would be woth trying it, simply because you get constantly annoyed but poor drawn guy No 1 and 2 and that poorly drawn girl and your poorly drawn hikikomori sister with her stupid request, which are some sort of sidequests. In fact, the story was so boring, I stopped even reading it at some point, since gameplay wise it's anyway like this: "go there, beat guys up, go back, get some reward"
Gameplay:
Gameplaywise it's realy like the Way of the Samurai series. You just walk around akihabara and beat shit out of evil guys. That's it. You have some quests, but the objective is just the same. Oh and if you wanna know, what made Way of the Samurai better: it was the actual story. The gameplay was realy short, like maybe two hours or so, but you had so many endings, and unlockables, that it made you play through the game again and again. Nothing of this is in Akiba's Trip. You just randomly mash buttons, so the cloths- there are three slots btw; headwear, upperwear and underwear - lose their durability so you can strip them of your enemies. Only if they lose all parts they will day. This doesn't include the underwear ofc, even if you can strip it off, after succesfully performing an easy combo chain and pressing the right button at the right time, and yes, it's all censored.
Unfortunetly I can't tell you what happens later on in the game, but I strongly assume that it's just it. My final rating would be maybe a 4/10, since it kept me occupied for at least 3 day in order to finde out if something might happen or not (it didn't) and because of the great detail put into Akihabaras 3D remodel with POIs that have actual pictures of the buildings and information provided to it.
This game costs something like 35€ on Steam in the EU right now and is completely overprized, imho, if you want to obtain it through other sources, I would not spend my time on it, unless you're drunk or stoned or just in deep despair to play something else.
Cheers
